What to bring to skate camp

Pads, helmets and the right board for a week of bowls, street and the barn park.

The non-negotiables

Every camper wears a certified helmet on every session, and knee, elbow and wrist pads in the bowls and on ramps. Look for a helmet certified for skateboarding, not just a bike sticker. Pads should have hard caps you can slide on, so a fall turns into a slide rather than a stop.

Sizing a deck: bowl versus street

For street and the indoor park, most campers are happiest on 8.0" to 8.25". For the flow bowl and transition, go wider, 8.5" and up, for a stable platform at speed. Not sure? Bring what you ride; coaches will help you dial it in during the week.

Wheels for concrete and wood

Hard wheels (99a and up) roll fast and slide predictably on smooth concrete and wood. Soft cruiser wheels feel sticky in a bowl, so leave those for the road.
